Our story - why Pebble Play?
A pebble is a beautifully complicated-simple thing.
To me, a pebble is smooth, self-contained, cool, calming, and perfect in its simplicity. I really love a good pebble—and yes, I have a collection of favourites (doesn’t everyone?!).
The photos above show what happened when I handed a few of my favourite pebbles to my friend’s seven-year-old daughter. Without prompting, she immediately started interacting with them—moving them around, arranging a face, building a flower, holding them tightly, and taking in their weight, textures, and temperatures. All the while, she was deeply focused, present, and grounded.
Pebbles are among humanity's oldest playthings. From the ancient game of Five Stones (the forerunner of Jacks) to Mancala, which has been played across continents for centuries under dozens of names, small stones have brought people together through play for generations. That long history makes the pebble a natural symbol for play therapy.
A pebble only becomes its smooth, tactile self through years of tumbling in water and sand—shaped over time by the movement of currents, weather, and time. It is always changing, always becoming.
People are very much the same.
A pebble represents both the possibility of change and the comfort of consistency and stability. It embodies an authentic, naturally imperfect perfection—qualities we cherish and nurture here at Pebble Play.
This is the heart of what I envisioned when I named this dream sixteen years ago, and I am so glad you are here as Pebble Play comes to life.
